Thirteen

Tallon moved through the gun room with practiced efficiency.

The drone had made its second pass five minutes ago and he’d gotten a good look at it. Definitely not military grade. Tallon pegged it as a cheap commercial model, flying too low and obvious.

Unless he was way off base and his paranoia was getting the best of him, Tallon figured the owners of the drone wouldn’t be far behind.

He pulled his primary weapon first - a custom AR-15, fitted with a holographic sight, suppressor, and FLIR thermal scope. Three loaded thirty-round mags went into his tactical vest. Backup Glock 19 on his hip, two spare mags in a drop holster.

He had clipped a tactical radio to his shoulder and did the same with Cross.

Now, Tallon checked the earpiece.

"Two minutes," he said into it. "They'll hit the south side first."

When Tallon had built the place, he’d taken everything into consideration, especially from a military point of view. In addition to the security sensors giving him constant motion tracking, he knew from experience how the average team would attack.

"Copy." Cross's voice came back a little shaky, but calm.

Tallon slipped on his vision monocle and adjusted the focus. He had grabbed four flash-bangs, and now they were hooked to his belt.

The familiar weight brought back plenty of memories.

The adobe walls would work for them. Eighteen inches thick, they'd stop most small arms fire. But the windows were vulnerable, even with the reinforced glass. He'd designed the house with interlocking fields of fire, clear lanes between rooms.

Now it was time to use them.

He had killed the house lights and now in the dark, his night vision showed the interior in sharp relief - long hallways, tight corners, designed for defense. The security feed on his tablet showed five heat signatures moving toward them. Amateur hour - they were bunched too close together, no proper spacing.

The first window shattered in the kitchen. Not a clean breach - they'd used a rock instead of a proper charge. Tallon was already moving, pressed against the wall of the hallway. Boot steps crunched on broken glass.

They weren’t even trying to be quiet, Tallon thought. How insulting.

He moved down the hallway, slipped out the kitchen door.

Two figures were outlined in the dark. Local talent for sure. They wore a mix of civilian and tactical gear.

Tallon fired without hesitation. His first burst caught the lead man in the chest, three rounds punching through substandard armor. The second man stood flat-footed, caught, incredibly, completely off guard.

Tallon shot him in the head.

"Contact south," he said into the radio.

He heard the sound of more glass breaking and then a burst of automatic fire, wild and untrained. These guys had firepower but no discipline. Tallon slid to a knee, sighted down the hallway. The next attacker walked right into his lane - bigger guy, ex-military by his movement, but sloppy now. Private security gone bad.

Two shots. Center mass. The intruder dropped to the floor like a bag of garbage. Pretty accurate description, Tallon thought.

"West side clear," Cross's voice crackled.
